‘STILL THE SEXIEST & FUNNIEST SHOW IN TOWN’
Evening Standard

Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical, The Rocky Horror Show comes to Malvern as part of a new world tour.

Having been seen by over 35 million theatregoers, The Rocky Horror Show is the story of two squeaky clean college kids–Brad and his fiancée Janet. When by a twist of fate, their car breaks down outside a creepy mansion whilst on their way to visit their former college professor, they meet the charismatic Dr Frank’n’Furter. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, filled with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity.

Directed by Christopher Luscombe, The Rocky Horror Show is the biggest party and features timeless classics, including Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet, and of course, the pelvic thrusting showstopping Time Warp.

*Stephen Webb will be playing the role of Frank-N-Furter

Event Reviews

  • The View from the Stalls

    Wonderfully, gloriously kinky and camp!

Malvern is certainly showing its sleazier side this week if the first night of Rocky Horror Show is anything to go by. A night out in fishnet tights and high heels for some - and that's just the men - all assembled to celebrate the return of those alien trans-sexuals from Transylvania.

If there is one musical which continually re-invents itself, bringing its energy and charm to a brand-new audience as well as retaining its hard-core fans, then it must be Richard O'Brien's show. Opening in June 1973, O'Brien's story of a pair of lovers who unexpectedly find themselves in a completely different world headed by Frank N Furter and his motley bunch of friends/workers/lovers/Phantoms has been a perennial favourite on the touring circuit for years and as such, with clever and varied casting particularly in the main roles of Frank and The Narrator, continues to draw a huge and very involved audience. Indeed, the involvement of the audience is as important an element as the story itself and tests every Narrator to the extreme.

In the past, these narrators have been as varied as Nicholas Parsons, Steve Punt, Dom Joly and Alison Hammond. This time it is the opportunity for comedian Nathan Caton to strut his stuff on stage and respond in kind to the many “interruptions” shouted at him from the audience, some of which, as he acknowledged, were very filthy indeed - especially from a supposedly gentile town like Malvern! There were a couple of up to date quips too, one about Keir Starmer’s “gifts”, showing that the script is continually updated. Any newbies to the show may well be intrigued as to how much the audience is an integral part, not just by pre-empting the script but also many of them wearing appropriate clothing.

In this show, the muscular Frank is played by Stephen Webb with Connor Carson as clean-cut Brad and alongside this pair is Lauren Chia as Brad's other half Janet (dammit!). The pivotal role of Riff Raff is taken this time is Job Greuter (replacing Kristian Lavercombe who has played the part in over 2000 performances). The very energetic and acrobatic part of Rocky is the domain of the appropriately-muscular yet diminutive Morgan Jackson, expertly carrying out his aerobics perfectly on the Malvern stage.

Part way through the second half, there was the dreaded “technical fault” which meant a break in the show and the curtains closed. Nothing which a Malvern audience can’t handle of course, giving rise as it did to an impromptu singalong of the Time Warp and an unexpected rendition of Happy Birthday for one audience member!

The whole cast worked brilliantly as, to be fair, did the audience! The musical accompaniment from the live band hidden away at the top of the stage was superb. The spectacular and colourful ending using smoke and lights was also beautifully done and had the audience on their feet doing the Time Warp along with the cast.

It certainly seems that the show, forever being refreshed with new casting, effects and updated scripts, is set to continue for many years to come. Well, it is now already over 50 years old…

  • Karen

    Fun, fun, fun
    Absolutely fantastic energy and entertainment.

  • A View from Behind the Arras

For more than 50 years now, Richard O’Brien’s glittering hit rock ‘n’ roll musical The Rocky Horror Show has continued to excite audiences and this week is no exception, oh no it isn’t.

Stephen Webb climbs expertly into his second skin and transforms in stockings and high heels for the role of Frank-N-Furter on stage at Malvern Theatres, so strap in tight because it’s going to be quite a raucous ride.

Remember not to bring confetti, rice, lighters or water pistols to the performance but you are positively encouraged to don rubber gloves, wave glow sticks, bring your own newspapers to help shelter Janet from the rain and of course a sequined top hat wouldn’t go amiss either. Prepare to be transformed into a pelvis thrusting, time-warping performer as it’s just as important to get involved and shout out as it is to just sit back and be transfixed. Led along brilliantly by the rambunctious, comedian narrator Nathan Caton, who oozes charisma and loves a freebie, as does Kier Starmer.

The racy story ushers in squeaky clean Brad, Connor Carson, and seemingly innocent fiancée Janet, Lauren Chia, as their car breaks down next to a rather foreboding abode. The naive couple are lured into the castle by Riff Raff, Job Greuter, who glares at them menacingly with a cheeky glint in his eye.

I first saw Stephen Webb as Frank N Furter in 2019 and he was fabulous then, oozing with charisma and pouring pizzazz all over the shop, and now his sass and swagger absolutely owns the theatre with such prowess and seductiveness so poor Brad and Janet didn’t stand a chance. With help from The Phantoms, Ryan Carter-Wilson, Arthur Janes, Hollie Nelson and Erica Wild, alongside Magenta, Natasha Hoeberigs and Columbia, Jayme-Lee Zanoncelli, the Time-Warp lifts the audience onto their feet for an epic feather boa swinging, bum wiggling re-enactment of the classic hit.

Janet and Brad only wanted to use a telephone to get their flat tyre seen to but ended up getting a lot more than they bargained for, especially when they meet the lab rat muscleman Rocky, Morgan Jackson, who was also in Heathers the Musical, when he is magically brought to life with impressive strength and not just one muscle but lots of muscles to help with all the backflips and press ups.

The first Act soared in typical risky fashion packed full of innuendo and corruption so the second Act certainly didn’t disappoint as the libidos crescendo and desire extends to an even larger half that escalates towards a chainsaw chase, a vigorous shoot-out and a climactic conclusion.

Not for the faint-hearted, The Rocky Horror Show never fails to be fierce, so grab your fishnets and join Frank-N-Furter at Malvern Theatres this week until Saturday October 12th. Directed by Christopher Luscombe, translated into over 20 languages and seen by 35 million theatregoers the party has such a cult following and it’s hard not to be swept up by the electric atmosphere. With hits such as Science Fiction/Double Feature, Dammit Janet, Sweet Transvestite and of course The Time-Warp, long live Eddie.
