JOHN GARTH

The Worlds of J.R.R.Tolkien – The Places that inspired Middle-earth

The landscapes of J.R.R Tolkien’s Middle-earth are much more than a backdrop to the action.  They’re a living part of it, utterly convincing and powerfully evocative. They owe much of their realism and depth to his personal connection with places he knew.  Many claims have been made for places supposed to have inspired him.  But what were his real touchstones in England and Wales and how did they work their way into his epic tales?

Award-winning Tolkien biographer John Garth takes us on a quest for the truth behind the myth.

John Garth is known worldwide for his award-winning writing on Tolkien’s life and work.  His books ‘Tolkien and the Great War’ and ‘’The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien’ are available in 18 languages in all.  John read English at St Anne’s College, Oxford, was a newspaper journalist for many years, and is now affiliated with Oxford again as a member of Corpus Christ College SCR.  He talks and teaches on Tolkien internationally.
