March 12 - March 13

High in the French Pyrenees, the reintroduction of brown bears provokes conflict with the shepherding community.

Ageing shepherd Yves struggles to find a successor as bears prey on his flock in their remote summer pasturelands; Lisa, a young shepherdess, discovers her chosen livelihood is too fraught to sustain; Cyril, a teenage boy is obsessed with tracking and photographing the bears. Two years in preparation, this characterdriven documentary eschews an activist approach. Instead, through breathtaking cinematography and immersive storytelling, it conveys the complexities of a situation where state legislation and ecological concerns clash with local customs. It’s a modern folktale about tradition, community and humanity’s relationship with a vanishing natural world.
