Brendan Foster gives a sympathetic portrayal of a struggling American actor searching for a connection in Tokyo.
Phillip Vanderpleog lives in the Japanese capital. Running out of work options, he is employed by a ‘rental family’ company, which provides clients with actors who stand in for absent loved ones. Sceptical at first, Phillip discovers in these roles, opportunities and relationships previously missing from his life. However, the line between performance and reality becomes increasingly blurred, as Phillip immerses himself a little too much in the roles he is hired to play. Full of visual comedy, this is a heart-warming film that embodies the human need to make attachments.
