Die Marquise von O (1976)
Directed by Éric Rohmer
Cert PG, Running Time 1h 42m
Drama/History
French with English Subtitles
Unusual in Rohmer’s oeuvre, this is a historical drama, set in the Napoleonic wars. Based on Kleist’s disturbing short story of an unspeakable crime committed when Russian troops attack a titled Italian family and shot with painterly composition, the film examines the patriarchal assault on women and the policing of female sexuality.
1976 Cannes Grand Jury Prize
1977 BAFTA winner – Best Costume Design
