In Rohmer’s most personal film, the reserved student Gaspard is on holiday in Brittany hoping to bump into his girlfriend Léna.  He meets Margot, then the flamboyant Solène.  Margot takes Gaspard to research sea shanties with Breton sailors.  Inspired, he writes a shanty for Solène.  He meets Léna, but is also attracted to Margot.  Which of these three omen does he desire most, or does he want to be free of any ties?
