COX & BOX

Music by Arthur Sullivan Libretto by F.C. Burnand

“A one act little masterpiece”

Cox and Box is a one-act comic opera by Francis Cowley Burnand & Arthur Sullivan based on the 1847 farce, Box & Cox.

This was Sullivan’s first successful comic opera, written 5 years before his first opera with W. S Gilbert.

The story concerns two lodgers, one who works at night and one who works during the day, unknowingly sharing a room, let by a cunning landlord. This works very well (for the landlord), until one of them has the day off and they meet each other in the room.

Performed by Mike Faulkner, Ian Walton and Paul Thompson

DIDO & AENEAS

Music by Henry Purcell Libretto by Nahum Tate

“A monumental work in Baroque opera”

Dido and Aeneas is a short opera in three acts, written by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell with a libretto by Nahum Tate. It was Purcell’s only true opera, and one of the earliest known English operas.

The tragic story recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her.
