Culture and Conversation: A talk and discussion series in partnership with the University of Worcester, delivered by expert lecturers in each field.
Where Lies the Truth with Jean Webb
In an age when discerning the truth of what we see and hear is becoming more clouded with the intervention of Artificial Intelligence, this session will give the opportunity to discuss the notions of truth, lies and perception in two books for teenage readers. Witch Child (2009) by Celia Rees takes the reader back to the 17th century and the truths and mistruths surrounding witches. Anne Fine’s The Tulip Touch (1997) features a young girl caught up in a world of lies and deception in the 1990s, a world which is seemingly safe, but with hidden threat.
The session will give the opportunity for people to explore these books which although very different in time, raise questions about truth and perception.
Prof. Jean Webb is an expert in children’s literature and teaches English literature at the University of Worcester.
