Fat Activism and Body Positivity with Robyn Platt
This talk explores Fat Activism, the radical social justice movement behind Body Positivity. Fat Activism developed alongside other social movements in the 1960s and 70s aiming to dismantle structures of oppression that deem certain people and bodies more worthy than others. Yet, unlike other biases, anti-fatness is frequently justified against the backdrop of the ‘obesity epidemic’ and has been thrown into sharp relief through the recent media frenzy around new weight loss medications. Fat Activism challenges notions about the ‘fat body’, centres marginalised experiences, and seeks to create a more liberated world.
